Research in this area is focused on control of the mare’s reproductive cycle, fertility of the mare and stallion, and development of state of the art assisted reproductive techniques.
Aime Johnson, DVM, DACT: My current research involves the development of better methods for estrus suppression in mares. We have investigated a human product and its efficacy and for use in the equine species. My clinical research focuses on improvement of fertility in subfertile stallions using advanced processing techniques. Lastly, I am also involved in perfecting advanced reproductive techniques including oocyte transfer. We are in the process of developing a laparoscopic approach to placement of the oocyte into the recipient mare.
Robyn Wilborn, DVM, MS, DACT: My current research involves the control of the mare’s reproductive cycle including ovulation induction and management of the anestrous and transition period. This has led to the investigation of a novel peptide (kisspeptin) believed to control many aspects of the reproductive cycle of the mare. Research of kisspeptin may allow better understanding of the mare’s cycle allowing more consistent methods of manipulation and breeding. I have also been involved with the investigation of new methods for estrus suppression in mares.
