Equine Internal Medicine

The equine internal medicine service is composed of 4 board certified internal medicine specialists and 3 graduate veterinarians in training to become specialists (residents). We see horses with respiratory, neurological, gastrointestinal (colic, diarrhea, gastric ulcers), muscular, endocrine and heart disorders. We also specialize in determining causes of weight loss, poor performance, and nasal discharge.

Equine Surgery

Outpatient services are offered in lameness diagnosis and treatment, prepurchase examinations, and performance evaluation. The Surgery Service provides expertise and state-of-the-art surgical treatment for a wide variety of soft tissue and orthopedic diseases, including advanced techniques in fracture repair, laser surgery, and minimally invasive surgery such as arthroscopy, laparoscopy, and thoracoscopy.

Field Service / Ambulatory

A wide range of assistance is offered by the Ambulatory Service, from routine vaccination and deworming, to emergency illness and trauma work-up. Daily appointments can be scheduled through the teaching hospital by calling 334-844-4490. The ambulatory service gives clients access to veterinary specialists of all types 24/7, 365 days a year.

    Equine Reproduction

Theriogenology conducts all aspects of assisted reproduction. Services include embryo transfer, management of the stallion and mare, diagnostic reproduction evaluations, breeding soundness, semen collection and shipment, and treatment of the sub-fertile mare and stallion. The center also stands stallions for  breeding to outside mares.

    Equine Podiatry

Our equine veterinarians at Auburn University work closely with farriers and hoof trimmers from various backgrounds and schools of thought. Clients can bring their horses with foot problems to the clinic to be evaluated by our vet-hoof care professional teams or bring in their own hoof care professional for assistance with optimizing an individual hoof care protocol for their horse.

    Equine Wellness and Preventive Care

The Importance of Preventive Care and Nutrition

    • General, preventive, and wellness care can help your horse live a longer, healthier life. While most of our general equine care services are delivered through our ambulatory/field service team, the same services can most often be performed in our hospital.
    • Vaccination, deworming and dentistry are part of an annual preventive care plan that contribute to optimum equine health. Breed, age, health, and environment all should be considered when determining if the horse should be seen by your veterinarian more frequently.
    • Our equine care team can also provide valuable nutritional information, and make recommendations regarding your horse's diet.
