Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine recognized 150 students with scholarships, awards and special acknowledgement during 2014 Honors Night.

Students received scholarships and awards totaling more than $793,000, the largest amount given to students in the college’s history.

“These honors were given by generous individuals, organizations and corporations who recognize the importance of assisting students financially as well as appreciate their endeavors in research, leadership, service, and academics” said Dr. Dan Givens, associate dean of academic affairs for the College of Veterinary Medicine.

“On behalf of the students and the profession, the College of Veterinary Medicine greatly appreciates the generosity of our donors.”

In total, 128 awards were given to first- through fourth-year students.

In addition to student awards, four Auburn University veterinary faculty were also honored, receiving recognition from students for their teaching enthusiasm.

Dr. Kellye Joiner, Student Government Association Outstanding Teacher Award

Dr. Joiner was chosen at the College of Veterinary Medicine’s representative for the SGA award.

In support of Dr. Joiner’s selection, one student remarked, “…It is easy to see that Dr. Joiner truly wants us to understand the concepts we are covering and wants us to do well.  And in turn, this makes us want to learn the material and do well.  Dr. Joiner’s energy and enthusiasm are infectious!”

An associate professor in the Department of Pathobiology, Dr. Joiner teaches pathology throughout the veterinary professional curriculum and the Biomedical Sciences graduate curriculum.

Dr. Julie Gard, Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching

Dr. Gard, an associate professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences, was selected b student nominations for this award, given since 1981.

Her areas of expertise include dairy production medicine, bovine embryology (including embryo technologies and advanced reproductive techniques), canine reproduction, and emergency response training.

A student in the Class of 2014 noted, “Dr. Gard is an amazing clinician. She fosters an environment of learning and also allows development of technical skills. She really helps you to apply what you have learned in the classroom to practical clinical situations.”

Dr. Ray Wilhite, SCAVMA Teacher of the Year Award

Dr. Wilhite is the Anatomy Laboratory Coordinator at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine.

He holds the B.S. degree in Geology from UAB and the Master of Geology degree from Brigham Young University.  In 2003 he earned the Ph.D. degree in Vertebrate Paleontology from Louisiana State University, where his love for old bones led him to instruction of veterinary anatomy.

Dr. Wilhite is committed to excellence in the anatomy laboratory and believes that a positive experience there provides a firm foundation for the remainder of a veterinary student’s education and careers.   A student summed it up in this way:  “Dr. Ray makes anatomy fun!”

Dr. Elaine Coleman, Zoetis Distinguished Teacher Award

An associate professor of veterinary anatomy and neuroscience, Dr. Coleman joined the College of Veterinary Medicine in 2001.   Dr. Elaine Coleman earned the D.V.M. degree from the Ohio State University in 1984.

Soon thereafter, she came to Auburn to complete an internship in Small Animal Surgery and Medicine, a residency in Small Animal Neurology/Neurosurgery and a Ph.D. and post-doctoral research in neuroscience.

Dr. Coleman is recognized by students and colleagues as being one of the most compassionate, rigorous, and highly regarded educators at the College of Veterinary Medicine.  A student remarked, “Dr. Coleman challenged us in lab by asking probing questions instead of always just pointing to the right answer and walking away. To her every interaction is a teachable moment.  She sets us up to succeed.”
