I participated in the Educapture course last summer, and it was one of the best experiences of my life!
The course is run in Pretoria, South Africa, by Andre Peinaar and his family. We stayed in tents at Phelwana Game Reserve, home to various animals including hippos, nyala, zebra and more.
Our days were varied and exciting. Some days we received lectures on pharmacology, animal handling, and the socio-economics of South Africa. Other days we were in the field capturing and moving animals. We also visited local sites including Moholoholo Rehabilitation Center, Khamai reptile park, and the famed Kruger National Park (where we received a private lecture on epidemiology from the state veterinarian). In the field we worked with various species including giraffe, impala, water buffalo, and saltwater crocodiles. Other students have worked with zebra, rhinos, and even big cats! Each day, we were supplied with delicious home cooked food and time to socialize around the braai.
After the course, a few of us visited Capetown to experience more of South Africa’s amazing culture. During our stay in we visited Robben Island, went shark diving, and visited a vineyard complete with resident cheetahs. In addition to site seeing, there are many opportunities to get involved with other veterinary related projects and extend your stay in Africa!
